Montreal, October 2, 2014 – For its second Prestige Conference, the Ordre des CPA du Québec welcomed Cynthia Cooper, CEO of the CooperGroup. Named one of Time Magazine’s Persons of the Year in 2002, Ms. Cooper is best known for blowing the whistle on WorldCom’s fraud schemes and exposing one of the largest financial scandals in history.

Speaking before a packed audience of more than 200 people, the accountant by training dove right into one of Quebec’s hottest issues: ethical leadership. She talked about how we can all help build ethical foundations in institutions to ensure their lasting success. Drawing on the pivotal role she played in bringing the WorldCom scandal to light, she shared the lessons about governance that can be drawn from the major financial scandals of the last decade.

“In the wake of the Charbonneau commission and UPAC investigations, Cynthia Cooper’s experience certainly ties into our collective contemplation on ways to eradicate collusion and corruption,” said Alain Dugal, FCPA, CA and Chair of the Order.

The CPA Order, whose primary mission is to protect the public, does not hesitate to contribute to important social debates on ethics and sound management. “Integrity, excellence and rigour are among the values that define our profession, which is why CPAs are the ones to turn to when it comes to governance, accountability and information reliability. It is our professional duty to use our expertise to serve the public and thus contribute to the social and economic development of Quebec,” added Daniel McMahon, FCPA, FCA, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Order.
