Bill on whistleblowers: The Order is on alert

The media are not the only ones interested in Bill 87, currently under review at the National Assembly. Following the comments we submitted to the government last January, the Order is closely monitoring progress on the bill which addresses, partially at least, one of the pivotal recommendations of the Charbonneau Commission. While the Order fully supports the bill’s objective, it is concerned that once enacted, the legislation would impair the protection of professional secrecy of CPAs, including those who practice in the public sector. The government has already approved an amendment to section 7, which addresses one of our main concerns. Nevertheless, the Order will continue to pay close attention to the debates, hoping the government and parliamentarians are as open to the other concerns we submitted.
