3 scholarships of $20,000, payable over two years
Call for applications
The applicant must meet the following requirements at the deadline for fill out the application form, ie November 29, 2019:
- be a member in good standing of the Quebec CPA Order;
- be enrolled in or admitted to a doctoral program in the following fields of expertise: assurance, financial accounting, management and management accounting, finance and taxation;
- agree to teach in Quebec's university network for a minimum of five years after obtaining their Ph.D.;
- agree to obtain a Ph.D. within six years of the date on which they began their doctoral program;
- agree to pay back the entire scholarship if they do not obtain a Ph.D. from the doctoral program within six years and do not comply with the requirement of teaching in Quebec’s university network for a minimum of five years after obtaining their Ph.D.;
- agree to mention the contribution of the Foundation in any publication that may result from the doctoral program and research work;
- fill out the scholarship application form and submit their application file (by email) to the Foundation by the deadline for submitting applications;
- declare that they have never received a Ph.D. scholarship from the Foundation of Quebec CPAs, the Foundation of Quebec CAs, the Fondation de l'Ordre des CMA du Québec, or the Quebec CGA Order.
The Foundation does not place any restrictions on the location of study. All members of the Order, including those working outside Quebec, may apply.
However, applications will not be accepted from applicants who:
- have been struck off the roll of the Order on disciplinary grounds;
- have been struck off the roll of the Order or subject to a suspension of their right to engage in professional activities by the Board of directors or the Executive committee of the Order, pursuant to section 55.1 of the Professional Code (criminal offence or disciplinary decision of another order);
- their right to engage in professional activities is currently restricted or suspended;
- are the subject of an inquiry by the syndic or prosecuted before civil or criminal courts.
Notwithstanding the aforementioned general principle and exceptions, when reviewing applications, the Ph.D. Scholarship Selection committee may accept or reject applications from members who have been reprimanded or fined in disciplinary proceedings on the basis of the relative importance of their fault. For that purpose, it must specifically consider:
- the seriousness of the alleged fault and the penalty imposed;
- the time that has elapsed between the imposition of the sanction and the submission of the application;
- the ensuing media coverage.

Documents to provide
- The duly completed scholarship application form.
- Complete and detailed official university transcripts of your university studies (certificates, degrees, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, doctorates, etc.); these transcripts must bear the seal of the educational institution where you studied and confirm the credential earned and the date on which it was obtained. In the event that equivalence has been granted for courses taken at other institutions, the transcripts for these courses must be attached to the file.
Note: A transcript printed from an Internet file will be accepted provided it includes the following information:
- the applicant's name;
- the program's and university's name;
- the cumulative average and the number of credits;
- the Internet URL.
- Two letters of evaluation or recommendation, depending on the case.
- Acknowledgements from publishers for all articles that are submitted or accepted for publication, where applicable.
- An attestation from the registrar’s office listing any part-time sessions or periods of non-enrolment, where applicable.
- An attestation from the registrar’s office confirming admission to the doctoral program, where applicable.
- Applicants who have not yet begun their doctoral program must submit enough information on their research topic (e.g. research statement) so that the Ph.D. Scholarship Selection committee can perform an effective review.
- Bearing in mind the objectives of the Ph.D. scholarship program, applicants are invited to describe their past and future teaching activities and explain their potential impacts on the chartered professional account profession.
Applications are evaluated based on the following criteria:
The suggested indicators are:
- the grade point average obtained during university studies,
- the advancement and duration of studies;
- applicants’ preparedness for doctoral studies.
The suggested indicators are:
- the nature of the university program;
- applicants’ experience and achievements;
- their letters of evaluation and recommendation.
The suggested indicators are:
- the clarity of the scientific objectives;
- the suitability of the methodology for the objectives;
- the innovativeness of the project;
- the contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the fields of expertise listed above in the program eligibility criteria;
- the contribution to teaching future CPAs.
Presentation of scholarships and method of payment
The scholarships will be paid when the Board of directors has approved the list of scholarship recipients, i.e. no later than March 31, 2020.
The first instalment of $10,000 will be paid upon the selection of the recipients and the final instalment will be paid the following year, on condition that recipients provide the Foundation with a report on the progress they have made in their doctoral program and a current transcript.
If the selected applicants have not begun their doctoral program when they submit their application, the first instalment will be paid only when they have begun their doctoral program.
To the extent possible, scholarships will be awarded in an official ceremony organized by the university. Therefore, the documents to be given to recipients will be sent to the person in charge of scholarships at the university. When scholarships cannot be awarded in an official ceremony, a letter including a cheque will be sent directly to recipients.
Please note that the scholarships are taxable.
Applicable penalties when recipients violate the rules
In the event of a violation of the Rules respecting the eligibility period, leaves and withdrawals and any other change to the university program, the Foundation may suspend the scheduled payments.
Deadline for submitting applications
Applicants are responsible for sending the requested documents to the Foundation by the deadlines.
The duly completed electronic form including all information requested must be sent by email (PDF version) to us by no later than 4:00 p.m. on November 29, 2019.
The documents must be properly identified
All incomplete or late files will be automatically rejected. Files received by email will not be accepted.
The Foundation will not follow up on missing, incomplete or late documents.
