Montreal, June 20, 2023 – Today, the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec (Quebec CPA Order) announced its intention to end its formal relationship with CPA Canada in its current form. This change will take effect in 18 months, in accordance with the terms of the current Collaboration Accord between the Quebec CPA Order and CPA Canada.

This will enable the Quebec CPA Order to fulfill its mission of protecting the public while conducting its operations more efficiently within a governance framework better suited to its organization. The decision comes following in-depth discussions on how best to carry out its mission while anticipating the unique needs of the Quebec economy, ensuring compliance with all obligations and responsibilities under Quebec’s legislative and regulatory framework, and providing members and candidates with the tools and support they need to stay on the cutting edge of a rapidly evolving business environment.

“The Quebec economy is unique in its language, culture and professional environment,” says Geneviève Mottard, President and CEO of the Quebec CPA Order. “This change will enable us to better meet the needs of the accounting profession in Quebec and support its rapid evolution, while optimally fulfilling our mandate to protect the public—the primary mission of any professional order.”

As this change is implemented, the Quebec CPA Order will engage its teams throughout the process to ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruption for members, candidates for the practice of the profession and other stakeholders. Members will continue to benefit from the same level of support and high-quality guidance from the Order. Current candidates will be able to continue their training activities, meet the requirements of the Professional Education Program and take the Common Final Examination in May or September 2023. Employers will be able to continue recruiting talent under the current international and inter-provincial agreements on labour mobility.

The Quebec CPA Order will continue to cooperate with other provincial and territorial bodies, as well as with CPA Canada, when doing so would be judicious.

The Quebec CPA Order will provide guidance, training and support to its members and candidates to ensure that they continue to meet their professional requirements and the highest standards of quality.

“CPAs are professionals at the heart of the Quebec economy,” says Mottard. “They are on the front lines of a constantly evolving business world, and a change in governance was needed to support them in an agile and responsible way as they respond to emerging issues and the unique challenges of our society.”
