Presentation

Shaking Up Business workshops offer your students an immersion in the world of business, where collaboration and strategic thinking take center stage. Thanks to a turnkey concept, all necessary materials are provided.

Workshop objectives:

  • Introduce the student community to case studies;
  • Demonstrate the importance of strategic thinking in the business world;
  • Demonstrate the need for leadership, communication skills and team spirit to bring projects to fruition;
  • Increase interest in the CPA designation as an asset for a successful career.

Materials include a PDF document of the case study and an explanatory video to facilitate the workshop, which lasts approximately 3 hours.

Which case study should you choose?

Introduction to Business Strategy

Difficulty: elementary

Level of study: 1st year of a technical program or 2nd year of a pre-university program

Summary: The cégep mandates students to raise funds. There are three different scenarios, each with its own starting cash flow, amount to raise and deadline. Using the attached chart, participants will be guided to find the best options according to their business strategy.

Business Transfer

Difficulty: intermediate

Level of study: 2nd or 3rd year of technical training

Summary: Dolores and Mario have owned their mobile catering business for 50 years. The company has enjoyed solid, stable financial health for many years. Thinking of retirement, they'd like to pass the business on to their 3 grandchildren, who have plenty of ideas...provided the ideas are feasible. Students will play the role of the consulting team representing the grandchildren, and will have to present a financial and strategic plan to their grandparents and the family's CPA to convince them.

Feedback

No correction grid is provided. The teacher is free to grade the workshop according to his or her own criteria. However, we suggest leading a group discussion following the workshop, including the following points:

  • Examine each of the possible options;
  • Demonstrate the importance of supporting arguments, as several solutions may be appropriate for the same case;
