Montreal, March 19, 2015 – The Quebec CPA Order has reviewed the final report of the Québec Taxation Review Committee released today and would like to commend the committee for the thorough work it conducted in tabling a report that will be of great use to Quebec society. The Order had been calling for such an exercise for many years.

The work performed by Luc Godbout’s team provides a factual assessment of the scope of the various tax measures in place in Quebec. While the government received an impressive number of recommendations, which it will have to analyze in detail, the CPA Order backs the committee’s main principles and objectives and is quick to support the principle of reducing tax expenditures.

“Our tax system provides an overall framework for how the population and businesses interact with the government. Any reform must aim for greater efficiency, transparency and simplicity,” said Daniel McMahon, FCPA, FCA, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Order. “At first glance, it seems that the committee’s work was guided by these objectives. Moreover, they will provide valuable insights for assessing the next provincial budget, which will be crucial to our collective effort to balance public finances and foster prosperity in Quebec.”

Mr. McMahon—chair of the organizing committee of TaxCoop, an international conference to be held this fall which calls for better tax competition between governments—acknowledges the committee’s willingness to combat tax evasion and unreported work and to promote fiscal cooperation among nations.

The report’s numerous proposals include many of the recommendations the Order made to both the Québec Taxation Review Committee and the Minister of Finance during the pre-budget consultations.
