CFE results and honour roll
Release of the results
We are pleased to inform students that official results for the September CFE are available to exam writers. Students are able to access their individual results on the results website. We congratulate all successful writers.
Today’s results are the outcome of months of comprehensive work by the Board of Examiners (BOE), who are responsible for marking the examination. The BOE consulted with multiple experts, including a psychologist, two psychometricians, and past BOE chairs. In addition, a third psychometrician was retained through Borden Ladner Gervais LLP as part of the third-party review. You can access online a summary of the BOE’s marking process [PDF] and findings from the third-party review [PDF].
The Board of Examiners would like to acknowledge the resilience of candidates who wrote the September 2019 Common Final Examination (CFE), in light of what was a challenging situation for many. In reading the responses from candidates who wrote in centres affected by challenges, the BOE noted that many candidates were able to draw on their technical training and their CPA enabling skills to prepare strong responses. Candidates are commended for their ability to perform under these trying circumstances.
During the marking process, there were several adjustments made in consultation with multiple experts, in order to account for factors that included start time delays and lack of access to reference materials.
Given the circumstances surrounding the September 2019 CFE, the Profession has determined that a failing mark on the September 2019 exam will not count as an attempt, and that any student who did not pass will be eligible for a free re-write of the CFE exam, along with access to the CPA Professional Education Program’s Capstone 2 preparatory module at no charge.
Detailed information about future opportunities for rewrites, and other remedial options if required, including reviews and requests for re-marking, is available on the Retest policy page.
Over the last number of months, the Profession has undertaken a comprehensive process to ensure that students are treated fairly, and that the due diligence completed is thorough. As a result of this work, we have every confidence in the integrity and reliability of the results of the September 2019 CFE and that all passing candidates have met the same entry requirement for the CPA profession as in previous sittings of the CFE.
We thank all students again for their ongoing patience.

Communication of results
Once the results are released, you will see “Pass” or “Fail” for Day 1 and for Day 2 and 3 in your file. You have questions about your results? To better understand your performance at the different levels assessed at the CFE, see the Information for candidates: Interpretation of your results document.
The Competency Referenced Evaluation Methodology [PowerPoint] presentation is a copy of the Board of Examiners presentation on the CFE. It highlights the important examination design elements and describes the assessment model, particularly the differences in the testing objectives for each of the three days of the examination. This document will help you better understand the evaluation process of the examination.
What if you fail?
Refer to the Retest policy page to find out what steps to take depending on your situation. The section also includes the procedure to follow if you decide to request a review of your examination results and/or a performance analysis. The deadline to submit the request for the CFE of September 2019 will be released come fall.
2018 CFE pass rates
CPA Canada has released annual examination pass rates for the 2018 CFE. The CFE pass rate for all 3 days averages the performance of candidates who wrote the May and September CFEs for the first time. The cumulative pass rate is the percentage of candidates, from a single cohort, who successfully completed the CFE after the examination was offered 3 times in a row.
